Business communication has changed over the years.  At one time paper notes left on an office desk was the main method for business communication for the mobile worker.  Voice mail later became an additional tool enabling mobile professionals to keep in touch.  The mobile professional armed with a cellular phone and voice mail could be kept abreast of  business situations.

Today email has become more and more a powerful, economic, and convenient method for business communication.  One advantage email has over voice mail is the ease of selecting messages that are important and deserve immediate attention. Email communication enjoys superior  recording facilities for all necessary information in text format (no need to quickly write down phone numbers and business information).  If several people are working on a project email communication can be an efficient method to coordinate projects - armed with software such as organizers, and email reply, and forwarding functions quick, efficient communication can easily be maintained.  Never mind faxing when you can send email to several people in one easy step.

With a BlackBerry Wireless Handheld device, email communication for the mobile worker is further enhanced.  Broad coverage enables mobile professionals to keep in contact anywhere quickly and easily.  With its organizer functions onboard the remote office worker will always have access to contact and calendar information. The BlackBerry can be left on all the time keeping the mobile worker abreast of changes to enable timely reaction.  The light weight and small size of the BlackBerry is the ideal solution for remote email communication.  With flat rate fees the BlackBerry communication plan is an economical solution for any mobile worker.

When traveling across the Canadian mosaic communication is not only a convenience but it increasingly has become an essential part of doing business.   Canada has always had a strong association with travel and communication technology; building a great railway and Alexander Bell's work with the telephone are examples in history.  With population spread over a large geographical area telecommunication is still an essential part of the Canadian life.  If you are traveling from Nanaimo to Kelowna or Lethbridge to Red Deer or from Medicine Hat to Halifax cellular communication can facilitate a safer and more convenient experience. Even if you don't travel the continent the cell phone and other cellular technologies keep you in touch when you are on the go.

In the early 1980's when analog cellular phone first became available the technology was expensive, $1000 or more for just the phone.  This analog phone service was called Advanced Mobile Phone Service or AMPS.  AMPS phones could be used in any 800 MHz cellular market across Canada, the United States and Pan America.  By the 1990's phone prices dropped dramatically and some wireless service providers (WSP) began giving phones free of charge when the customer signed a three year service contract.  Many people were wary of such long contracts and preferred to buy the phone without the obligation of remaining with the same WSP.

Bell Mobility, Telus Mobility, and Rogers offered these services and by the mid-1990's began introducing digital personal communication services (PCS).  Digital PCS communication offered some advantages over AMPS system: 1) Email or Short Message Service (SMS); 2) digital encoding increasing privacy; 3) extended battery life.  Initially such services were confined to major urban centres such as Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.  Many digital phones offer a dual mode (digital and analog) which search for an analog signal when digital service is not available.  Depending where you live you may still have to settle for analog services.  Pricing difference between PCS and AMPS is negligible.
